Repair Tips for Shower Glass Door Problems

Glass shower doors are a great way to add a modern look to your bathroom. Although they are very durable, much like anything else, they will eventually need repair. There’s no reason for repairs to completely disrupt your shower routine though. To keep your shower in the best shape possible, we’re sharing some at home repair tips and information about when you should call in the pros.

Sticking shower door

When a shower door isn’t closing properly, there could be something stuck between the two panels or the screws of the hinges are loose. To troubleshoot this issue, take a close look at where the two panels meet.  If the hinge screws are loose, gently tighten them with a screwdriver.

Shower buildup collects and forms soap scum, mildew, or both. Spray the shower door with a mixture of vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Gently scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush and rinse thoroughly.

Scratched shower door

A scratched shower door, whether discreet or unsightly, doesn’t have to leave your shower unusable. Scratches can typically be buffed out and the glass restored to its original finish. This job however is best left to the professionals. Incorrectly buffing out a shower door can cause further damage to the door itself, or even harm to the one repairing it. Give your local shower professionals a call to have your shower door smoothed out.

Leaking shower door

Leaking shower doors can cause problems for the outside of your shower. Over time, water escapes from the shower and runs onto the tile, floor, or rugs near your shower. Typically a minor fix, if left unchecked, this can cause property damage.

To repair a leaking shower door, you’ll need to check the integrity of the seals. Each seal should be water tight. Contact your local shower repair technician to inspect the seals and perform a quick and lasting seal repair.

Shower Door Sweep Replacement

A shower door sweep is a strip of material that snaps onto the edges of frameless shower doors. This strip is critical to preventing water from dripping outside of the shower.

You can increase the life of your shower door sweep by cleaning your shower regularly.

Should you need a true replacement, these parts can be found at your local hardware store. If you’re unfamiliar or uncomfortable with performing this repair at home, contact your local shower technician

How to replace a shower door bottom seal

The bottom seals can be replaced at home and many local hardware stores sell these parts.

This strip of material keeps your shower watertight. To repair this at home, determine which type of seal material you have and buy a seal of the same material and measurements.

To replace, simply remove the old seal and clean the edge of the glass door. Once dry, attach the new seal and cut to the appropriate length if needed.

How to replace a shower door jamb or door stop seal

A shower door jamb or door stop seal can connect either two pieces of glass or a piece of glass to the wall. With care, both are possible to repair at home.

Remove the old part and clean the glass or wall it was attached to. Once dry, measure the new part from the bottom of the shower to the top of the shower. Ensure it is facing the right direction so the shower closes securely.

Replacing a shower door hinge-side sweep

The most critical part of this replacement is making the correct measurements, markings, and cuttings needed for your shower door. First, remove the old hinge-side sweep. Once removed, it’s good practice to clean the glass it was attached to.

You’ll need to make some notches with a cutting tool to ensure the new piece fits around the hinges and the bottom seal. Once dry, attach your new and properly measured hinge-side sweep to the shower door.

Solutions for Fixing the Leaks Under the Frameless Shower Door

To fix a leak under a frameless shower door, you’ll first need to determine where the leak is coming from by inspecting it thoroughly. Water could be leaking from the bottom or from the side and running down along the shower.
If the leak is truly at the bottom, you’ll need to replace the glass door sweep. If the leak is on the side, you’ll need to replace the glass door seal.

Handling and Repair Tips for Frameless Hinged Shower Door

When handling and repairing a frameless hinged shower door itself, you may want to call for the support of professionals. They can handle the glass to ensure it isn’t damaged while repairs are being made. Our professionals use their expertise to see if a new set should be installed or if the current one is still repairable.

Hinges on frameless shower doors are more prone to rust, but proactively keeping them dry after use can extend their life.

Replacing Glass Shower Door Hinges

Replacing glass shower door hinges are best repaired with the help of a professional.

Loose screws can cause the hinges or the door to sag. If you choose to do this repair at home, have someone hold the glass door while you unscrew the hinges so the glass doesn’t get damaged.

Remove the old hinge, clean the glass near hinges and allow it to dry completely. Attach the new hinges and screw them into the original space on the shower.

When Should You Contact a Pro

Some of the repairs mentioned above are best done by a professional. Most importantly, if there is any repair that you feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar with, it’s best to contact a pro.

The cost of repairs that should have been performed by a pro can have unexpected consequences like further damage or costly repairs. When in doubt, it’s a good idea to all in the pros and let them handle your shower door with care.
