Every shower door shop in DFW will tell you they sell custom doors. Most of them are selling stock glass cut to your opening. Before you sign a quote, here is what separates the two.

A stock shower door:

A truly custom shower door:

• May use 1/2 inch tempered glass for oversized panels (over 96 inches tall or over 36 inches wide)
• Can be configured in non-standard layouts — neo-angle, curved, soffit-to-ceiling, walk-in splash, steam-sealed
• Uses premium or special-order hardware in any finish, including custom PVD
• May use low-iron Starphire glass, patterned glass, sandblasted privacy zones, or factory-applied coatings
• Is templated in your bathroom before fabrication starts
• Installs in 2 to 6 weeks depending on glass and hardware lead time

Configurations We Build Most Often and What Each One Costs

Custom projects tend to cluster around six layouts. Here is how each one breaks down for a DFW homeowner.

Neo-angle corner enclosure
Three panels meeting at 135-degree angles. Ideal for tight master baths where a hard 90-degree corner steals floor space. Typical install: $4,500 to $9,500 in 3/8 inch tempered. Add $400 to $800 for low-iron glass.

Soffit-to-ceiling enclosure
Panels run from the shower pan all the way to a dropped soffit or the ceiling itself. Removes the visual break and lets the tile read as a single wall. Requires precision field templating. Typical install: $5,500 to $12,000.

Curved or radius enclosure
Bent glass for corner showers without a hard 90-degree meet. Lead time is 4 to 6 weeks because the glass is bent at the fabricator, not in our shop. Typical install: $6,000 and up, scaling with radius and panel count.

Walk-in splash panel (no door)
A single fixed panel, 36 to 60 inches wide, that contains splash with no swinging door. Cleanest possible look. Works in showers that drain toward the back wall. Typical install: $1,800 to $3,800.

Steam shower enclosure
Fully sealed top with an operable transom vent and silicone-sealed perimeter. Glass thickness moves to 1/2 inch for the added weight. Pairs with our shower hardware and add-on packages. Typical install: $7,500 to $16,000.

Oversized single panel
One panel, 60 inches or wider, or 96 inches or taller, hinged off the wall with heavy-duty pivot hinges. Common in modern master baths. Requires 1/2 inch glass and structural anchoring into studs or blocking. Typical install: $3,800 to $7,200.

Glass and Hardware Decisions That Actually Matter

Custom shower doors have a long list of optional upgrades. Three of them return more than the rest combined. Everything else is preference.

Low-iron Starphire glass. Standard tempered glass has a slight green tint that gets stronger at thicker panels. On a 96 inch tall door in 1/2 inch glass, the green edge is obvious. Low-iron strips the iron oxide out of the mix, so the glass reads truly clear. Adds roughly $200 to $400 per panel. If your shower is the visual centerpiece of the bathroom, this is the upgrade that matters.

ClearShield or Diamon-Fusion coating. Factory-applied at fabrication. Fills in the microscopic pores in glass so calcium and magnesium cannot bond to the surface. In Tarrant County water (12+ grains per gallon), this is the difference between glass that looks new at year 10 and glass that needs replacement at year 7. Adds $200 to $400 per panel.

Heavy-duty hinges. Hinges fail first on any shower door, custom or not. Standard hinges are rated for panels up to about 80 pounds. On a 1/2 inch oversized panel, you need hinges rated to 130+ pounds with adjustable cams. The wrong hinge on the right panel sags within three years. Hardware upgrade across a typical custom enclosure: $300 to $600.

Hardware finishes we stock: brushed nickel, matte black, polished chrome, brushed brass, antique brass, oil-rubbed bronze. Custom finishes (champagne bronze, gold, custom PVD to match a specific faucet line) add 2 to 3 weeks to lead time but match exactly.

From Consultation to Install Day — How a Custom Project Actually Runs

A custom shower door is a 4 to 8 week project from first call to final walkthrough. Here is what each step looks like.

Free in-home consultation. Same-day if you are within 30 minutes of Haltom City. Two to three days for Dallas, Plano, Frisco. We bring glass samples, hardware samples, and a folder of recent custom projects to look through. The point of this visit is to figure out what is actually possible inside your bathroom and your budget, not to upsell.

Written quote within 24 hours. Itemized — glass spec, hardware, coating, install, sales tax. Nothing buried. Financing available if you want to spread the payment.

Field measurement and template. Once you approve the quote, we come back with laser and digital templates. Curved and steam enclosures get a physical cardboard template too. Walls get checked for plumb with a 4-foot level. Anything more than 3/4 inch out of plumb gets flagged.

Fabrication in our Haltom City shop. Stock glass and hardware: 3 to 5 business days. Low-iron or oversized glass: 7 to 10 days. Curved glass or custom-finish hardware: 2 to 6 weeks. The same shop owner who measured your bathroom cuts and tempers the glass.

Install day. Two-person crew, 3 to 6 hours depending on configuration. Drop cloths from front door to bathroom. Dry fit first to confirm the cut. Anchor into studs or tile-backed blocking. Silicone seal, 10-cycle open and close test, walkthrough. You get a free squeegee, care guide, and warranty paperwork before we leave.

Same-evening follow-up. Text from the owner to confirm everything is sitting right. We coordinate hardware warranty claims directly if anything ever fails — you do not chase the manufacturer.

What a Custom Shower Door Actually Costs in DFW

Most custom projects we install land between $4,500 and $12,000 finished. Some go higher. Here is what drives the number, in order of how much it matters.

Glass square footage and thickness. 1/2 inch tempered glass runs roughly 60% more per square foot than 3/8 inch. A soffit-to-ceiling enclosure has more square footage than a single panel + door, and probably needs the thicker glass too. This is the biggest line item on most quotes.

Hardware tier. Stock finishes are baseline. Designer hardware (large ladder pulls, continuous headers, premium hinges) adds $400 to $1,200 per door. Custom-finish hardware to match an existing faucet line adds $600 to $1,500.

Surface treatment. ClearShield or Diamon-Fusion across a full enclosure: $600 to $1,400. Worth it in DFW water for any project you expect to live with longer than five years.

Glass type. Low-iron Starphire: $200 to $400 per panel. Patterned, fluted, or rain glass: $150 to $350 per panel. Sandblasted privacy zones: $200 to $500 depending on coverage area.
