A pony wall is a short tiled wall, usually 3 to 4 feet tall, that closes in one side of a shower. You will also hear it called a half wall or a knee wall. By itself it only stops the spray down low. Put glass on top and the shower stays open and bright while the water stays inside.
We put glass on pony walls all over Dallas–Fort Worth, and the same questions come up on almost every job. Do I need a door? What holds the glass up? What has to be finished before you measure? Here are straight answers.
The short answer
There are three common setups: one fixed panel on the wall for a doorless walk-in, a fixed panel with a hinged door, or a full enclosure with panels on the half wall and a door on the curb. Clamps or a metal channel hold the panel at the bottom. Bigger panels may also need a support bar to the wall or ceiling. Every frameless glass shower on a pony wall is cut to fit after the tile is done.
Glass options for a half wall shower
Fixed panel only (doorless walk-in)
One piece of glass sits on the pony wall and stops at the entry. No door to swing, no door to squeegee. It works when the shower is deep and the shower head points away from the opening. If the spray hits the entry, you will be mopping the floor, so plan on a door.
Fixed panel plus a door
The panel sits on the half wall and a door hangs next to it, swinging out over the curb. The door can hinge off the side wall or off the glass panel. For a shallow shower, or any shower where the head faces the opening, this is the layout we usually recommend.
Full enclosure on one or two half walls
Some bigger primary baths have half walls on two sides. Glass goes on top of each one and a door closes the entry, so you end up with a custom shower enclosure that is fully closed in but still lets the light through.
Glass to the ceiling for a steam shower
A steam shower has to hold the steam in, so the glass runs all the way to the ceiling, usually with a transom panel over the door. For steam showers, Wise Glass provides the steam-rated glass enclosure only. The steam generator and controls are not part of our work.
How glass is held on a pony wall
A panel on a half wall has nothing behind it but air, so the hardware does more of the work.
- Clamps grip the bottom edge of the glass and anchor into the top of the wall. They leave the most glass showing.
- A U-channel is a slim metal track along the top of the wall. The glass sits down inside it, so the whole bottom edge is supported.
- A support bar runs from the top of the glass to the side wall or the ceiling. It keeps a tall panel from flexing, especially when a door hangs off it.
Which of these you need depends on how big the panel is, whether a door hangs from it and how the wall was built. We decide that at the final measurement, not from a photo.
Clamps, hinges and bars come in chrome, brushed nickel, matte black and brass, so you can match your faucet. Our guide to choosing shower door hardware goes into the trade-offs.
Picking the glass
- Clear glass shows off your tile and keeps the room bright.
- Low-iron glass is extra clear. It does not have the green tint you can see on the edge of standard glass.
- Frosted or textured glass gives you some privacy, which is handy when the pony wall faces the toilet or the bathroom door. Our glass textures guide walks through the options.
- Most panels are 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch thick. Thicker glass feels more solid but weighs more, and on a half wall that matters. Our post on glass panel weight explains why.
What has to be done before we measure
We cut the glass to fit the finished wall, so the tile work comes first.
- Before the final measurement, every surface the glass touches (tile, curb, walls and floor) must be complete: tile set, grouted, caulked and fully cured, with waterproofing done.
- The shower curb must slope inward toward the drain. Ask your tile contractor to confirm this before tile is set.
- The top of the pony wall needs a finished cap in tile or stone, and it has to be solid enough to anchor into. If the wall is still being framed, ask your builder to add solid backing where the glass will attach.
- If a support bar will run to a side wall, that wall has to be finished too.
A half wall that leans a little, or a cap that got tiled before anyone thought about the glass, makes the install harder than it needs to be. In the middle of a remodel? Send photos now. We can talk through the layout early, so your tile setter builds the wall the way the glass needs it.

What affects the price
Every enclosure is custom priced. The layout matters most: each angle and miter adds fabrication cost. Glass thickness, glass type and hardware finish also affect the price.
On a pony wall, the number of panels, whether you add a door and whether the glass needs a support bar all change that layout. That is why we price your actual opening instead of handing you a price list.

Pony wall shower FAQ
Do I need a door on a half wall shower?
Not always. A deep shower with the head pointed away from the opening can work as a doorless walk-in with one fixed panel. If the shower is shallow or the spray hits the entry, get the door.
How tall should the glass on a pony wall be?
Usually the top of the panel lines up with the top of the door, so the enclosure reads as one clean line. For a steam shower, the glass goes to the ceiling.
Will water splash over a pony wall?
Without glass, yes, some of it will. The wall blocks spray down low, but water off the shower head travels right over it. Glass on top keeps it in.
Can you add glass to an existing pony wall?
Yes, as long as the wall is finished and solid. Send photos of the wall and its top cap, and we will tell you which hardware fits.
How long does it take to install?
Your custom glass is typically installed within 7 to 10 days after the final measurement. Wait 24 hours before the first shower so the silicone can cure, and do not touch the silicone seals while they cure. Every new shower installation comes with a bottle of Wise Care glass cleaner, left in your shower by the crew.
